Game analysis: Avaí, against Atlético-GO…

August 30, 2010

The last time that I posted in the portuguese version of this blog (, around a month ago, Avaí was considered one of the best teams playing in Brazil.

Speed and creativity were the best weapons that the “Leão da Ilha” had. Roberto and Caio were constantly in the Best XI of many sports website.

The victories over São Paulo, Palmeiras, Goiás and the draws with Flamengo and Atlético-MG were considered good results, giving credit to a good team.

But in soccer (or football, as you wish), one month it’s like an year and the situation of Guga’s team is now totally different. And this game against Atlético-Go is a proff of that.

Avaí has like 40 players in the roster but still has no bench. During this time, Roberto, Caio and Davi were injuried and Rivaldo was sold to Palmeiras. And only four changes were enought to tranform the good Avaí into a regular Avaí.

Vandinho scored two goals but still not in his best. To be honest, I don’t think he will ever be in shape again. And I am not talking about his weight, but his mentality. He gives up in many balls, don’t fight to get the ball back and sometimes don’t even care to give a good pass. Válber is a good player, but has no pace yet. And Jeferson isn’t Rivaldo. Period.

Avaí needs to win again or it’s situation will get even more dangerous. Let’s hope that Caio and Davi can get back to play against Santos, on thursday, or the 8th position in Brasileirão will turn into the 15th position. There is no doubt about that.

MVP: midfielder Robinho, of Avaí – Okay, Vandinho scored twice, same as Elias for Atlético-GO. But nobody gives credit to this player, that quietly, is carring Avaí in his back. He is playing out of position, but still the best player in the field. And the worse part is whenever Antônio Lopes makes a substitution, is Robinho who comes out. Even when he is the best player in the game. Something does not make sense…

Grade: 8

Tactical Analisys:

Avaí played in 4-4-2 system, with three defensive midfielders and with Robinho playing as a fake forward. Válber and Robinho tried to create oportunities, but Jeferson was lost in field and did not help. For the tactic that Avaí uses, Vandinho is too slow and because of that, most of the times, Avaí  has only 9 players helping the defense.

Antônio Lopes used all substitutions, but only Leandro Bonfim helped. Leonardo was another Vandinho in attack and Sávio could not keep the pace of Robinho.  Thinking about the whole situation and how Avaí played, the draw was a good result.

That’s it. Leave you comments or opinions…
